What is NIE?
The NIE (Foreigner’s Identification Number or Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is a unique number assigned by the Spanish authorities to foreigners who need to carry out administrative procedures in Spain, including accessing social security services. But, do you need the NIE if you want to buy a luxury house in Barcelona? That’s something we will see along this article. It is a tax identification number that is used to carry out various procedures, such as opening a bank account, buying a property, applying for a work permit (here we leave you an article where we talk about how to find a job in Barcelona), paying taxes, among others.
The NIE consists of an initial letter, seven numerical digits and a final letter, and is issued by the National Police or the Foreigners Office. It is important to note that the NIE does not grant any right of residence or work in Spain, it is simply an identification number that is required to carry out certain procedures.
The NIE is mandatory for foreigners who reside in Spain for more than three months a year, even if they do not intend to work in the country. If you plan to reside in Spain for a long period of time, it is important that you apply for the NIE as soon as possible to facilitate your administrative procedures: a highly recommended experience if you are thinking of coming to live in Barcelona, because this is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Here you should not be afraid because you can live in Barcelona without speaking Spanish, since being one of the 2 capitals of the Spanish state, anyone will be able to understand you if you speak English, these are some of the great advantages of living in a city.
